Deforestation in Western Australia’s Northern Jarrah Forest
In February 2025, the Australian government approved South32’s expansion of a bauxite mine near Boddington, Western Australia. This project involves clearing up to 3,855 hectares of native vegetation in the Northern Jarrah Forest, an area home to endangered species like the black cockatoo, woylie, and numbat. Despite a ban on native forest logging enacted in 2024, mining operations continue to be permitted under separate policies. Environmentalists, including actor Leonardo DiCaprio, have criticized this decision, emphasizing the potential loss of biodiversity and the degradation of critical habitats.
